Freddy Fender, RIP

I heard on the radio that Freddy Fender died yesterday. It's always sad when a great musician dies - and he was a great musician. I worked with him on a movie I scored way back in 1991 called La Pastorela: A Shepherd's Tale for PBS Great Performances. I remember that I arrived at the recording studio prepared with my vocal harmonization that I was going to "teach" to Freddy Fender. Well, he came up with his own harmonization. Right on the spot. And it was much better than mine.

We talked afterwards and I guess he must of thought I was a good musician because he started to give me advice about my career. He said "As you go through your career in music, it's always important to have options, make sure you always have options." The advice must have stuck because a couple of years later I branched out of only being a film composer but also writing concert music.

After the LALIFF Screenings

After a weekend full of screenings, catching up with people, and having a great time, I can report that both Lalo Guerrero The Original Chicano and Los Lonely Boys: Cottonfields and Crossroads were a big hit! For those in Los Angeles, don't forget to see Lalo Guerero on KCET this Thursday at 8pm

LALIFF

Hanging out with Lalo Guerrero producers Dan Guerrero (aka Gaytino!) and Nancy De Los Santos. Oh, and of course, Edward James Olmos.

My Cousin Matt Munoz

After I sent out my notice regarding, amongst other things, the screening of Los Lonely Boys: Cottonfields and Crossroads at the LALIFF Film Festival Sunday, October 8th at 1:00pm, I received an email from my cuz Matt Munoz informing me of his recent interview with Henry Garza from Los Lonely Boys on his podcast from my homeland, Bakotopia.

This is not my cousin Matt

Out of the hundreds, perhaps thousands of first cousins we have living in and around the San Joaquin Valley, I believe Matt is the only other relative I have that is into music. He is the lead singer and sax player of his rockin' ska band
Mento Buru and now I find out that he is also a DJ that has interviewed the likes of Eva Longoria, Santana, and Ozomatli. I'm so proud of him! Check out his interview. It's a good primer for the screening on Sunday.

Video from Sydney

While we wait with bated breath for the recording to arrive from Australia, here is a video excerpt of the recent performance of the "Gloria" from Misa Azteca at the Sydney Opera House.

Two in the LALIFF Film Festival

I have two documentaries that I scored in the Latino International Film Institute Film Festival in Los Angeles this year.  The first one is Lalo Guerrero The Original Chicano this Saturday, October 7th, at 3:45p at the Egyptian Theater.  The next one is Los Lonely Boys:  Cottonfields and Crossroads Sunday, October 8th at the Lloyd E. Rigler Theater.  I don't know if either of them repeat but you could download the entire schedule at the LALIFF web site.

This is a great film festival with some great films.  It's a good place to see what's going on in the Latino film world.

UPDATE
I forgot to put the time when
Los Lonely Boys: Cottonfields and Crossroads starts. It is Sunday October 8th at 1:00p in the Lloyd E. Rigler Theater.
